Caledonia is a few streets of old frame houses off Route 173, with farm ground on every side. Martin Exteriors Roofing & Siding fixes siding here by replacing the damaged boards or panels, with James Hardie fiber cement as our first pick and vinyl as the other main option. Sealant or filler is never the fix. The village is roughly 9 miles from our Roscoe office, about 15 minutes east on Route 173. Inspections are free, and (815) 624-6278 is answered 24/7.
Old Houses on Main, Front and Randolph
Caledonia dates to 1854, its post office was first called Caledonia Station, and it incorporated as a village in 1996. The wood frame houses on Main Street, Front Street and Randolph Street are the old core, and many have been resided more than once.
Behind today’s vinyl or aluminum there may be original clapboard, furring strips or a second layer, so wall depth at trim and corners is rarely standard. Before we order, we pull a damaged piece, look underneath and tell you what the repair involves. Soft boards or sheathing get replaced, and the new siding is fitted to the existing reveal.
Caledonia Homes by the Numbers
The village has only about 120 homes, and its Census estimate carries a margin of error of about 50 homes, so we read it only as a rough sign that most village houses predate 1940. ZIP 61011, which covers the village and the countryside around it, gives a steadier picture: about 1,050 homes (Census estimates for 2020 to 2024). Its median home was built in 1992, about 38% went up in the 1990s and about 15% predate 1940. About 97% are detached houses and about 94% are owner occupied.
Wind Across Open Fields
A 1909 county history called the land around Caledonia scrub oak barrens. Today it is open crop ground, and along Route 173 there is often nothing between a house and the next farm but a field. On vinyl, wind with that long a run shows up as panels unhooked at the bottom lock, a corner post pulled loose or a piece missing from the side facing the fields. We replace the torn or missing pieces, refasten the loose ones so they can still move with temperature, and check the rest of that wall.
Farmhouses, Garages and Outbuildings
Plenty of homes out here have a detached garage, a shed or a barn. While we are out to repair your house, we can look at damaged siding on those buildings and add it to the same job. Tell us what is out there when you call and we will say what we can match.
For replacement boards on a farmhouse, James Hardie lap is our first pick. Vinyl costs less, and engineered wood is available on request.

Caledonia Siding Repair FAQ
Is James Hardie a good fit for an old Caledonia farmhouse?
Usually. It has the look of painted wood lap siding and stands up to wind off the fields better than vinyl does.
My Caledonia house has been resided more than once. Can you still repair one section?
Yes. We pull a damaged piece to see the layers underneath, then replace soft wood and fit the new siding to the existing reveal.
Siding keeps coming loose on the side facing the fields. What causes that?
Wind off open ground works on panels that are not fully hooked at the bottom lock. We replace torn pieces and refasten the loose ones on that wall.
Can you fix siding on my garage or barn too?
We can look at it while we are out for the house and add it to the same job. Tell us what is on the building when you call.
