ROOFING. SIDING. EXCELLENCE.
GAF MASTER ELITE CONTRACTOR • INC. 5000 COMPANY • ROCKFORD’S BEST ROOFER 6 YEARS RUNNING
Roofing Contractor in Milton, WI
Martin Exteriors is the roofing contractor Milton homeowners call for roof replacement, leak repair, siding and storm work in this Rock County city just north of Janesville. Our crews come from our Roscoe, Illinois office, about 45 minutes away, north on I-39/90 past Janesville.
In Wisconsin we’re a certified dwelling contractor (#1436189). GAF lists us as a Master Elite contractor, a status fewer than 2% of roofers hold, and that is what lets us register a qualifying roof for a 50-year GAF warranty with 30 years on workmanship (GAF eligibility rules apply). A free inspection is one call away at (815) 624-6278, and the line is answered around the clock.
From the Milton House to New Subdivisions
Joseph Goodrich settled here in 1839 and put up the Milton House in 1844, so Milton holds some of the oldest buildings in Rock County. The city keeps growing, too: 5,546 people in 2010, 5,716 in the 2020 Census, and a Census Bureau estimate of 6,024 for July 2025.
That shows up on the roofs. Close to downtown, older houses tend to have steep gables, chimneys and attics that were never vented properly, and it’s common to find a second layer of shingles nailed over the first. Out in the newer subdivisions, most roofs still wear the builder’s original shingles, and a plain tear-off there is usually a one-day job.
Milton Permits and Inspections
Remodeling and siding projects in Milton need a building permit, among other work. Because we hold a Wisconsin dwelling contractor certification, Martin Exteriors pulls and handles all required permits and books the inspection.
Milton Roof Repairs
Wisconsin freeze and thaw cycles work small openings bigger every winter: a nail that backs out, a pipe boot that splits in the cold, a chimney flashing that lets go. Catching those early keeps a small repair small.
Here’s how a Milton repair goes. We come out for a free inspection, climb the roof, take pictures and go over them with you at the kitchen table. You get the repair price in writing. If wind or hail has opened the roof, emergency tarping can be done within 24 hours. Read more about roof repair and emergency roof repair. See our full guide to roof repair in Milton.
Winter Leaks Along the Eaves
A ceiling stain near an outside wall in late winter usually means an ice dam. Heat from the house melts snow up high, the water refreezes over the cold overhang, and the dam pushes meltwater under the shingles. When we reroof, we run ice and water barrier along the eaves and set up ventilation so the attic stays closer to the outdoor temperature. Insulation is a separate trade, and we’ll tell you if you need it. If an ice dam is already leaking, see our page on ice dam roof leak repair.
What Happens on a Milton Roof Replacement
Expect one day on site for most Milton houses. A steep, older house near downtown can need longer, and weather sometimes moves the start. For the full local guide, see our page on roof replacement in Milton.
- Inspection with photos. Shingles, flashing, vents, attic airflow and the deck all get checked, and we count how many layers are up there.

Siding and Commercial Work in Milton
Hail-Damaged Siding
Hail that dents siding usually cracks vinyl too. We’ll check whether a matching repair is possible or if a full side or the whole house makes more sense, and we’ll tell you straight if your old color is discontinued. We install vinyl and James Hardie fiber cement, most siding jobs take 1-2 days, and our own crews are licensed to remove old asbestos siding. See our page on siding in Milton, or our Janesville and Rock County siding page. For broken, loose or rotted boards, see siding repair in Milton.
Business Roofs
Milton’s downtown buildings and the businesses along Highway 26 and Highway 59 often have flat or low-slope roofs. We inspect, repair and replace those, and plan around your business hours. See commercial roofing.
After a Rock County Storm
Call us before you call anyone else. We check the roof and the siding, take photos and help with your insurance claim, from the adjuster visit to the insurer’s estimate. Since 2006 we’ve helped thousands of homeowners through roof claims, and if the damage isn’t worth a claim, you’ll hear that from us. See storm damage repair and insurance claims.
Gutters and Downspouts
Dented downspouts are often the first sign a Milton house took hail. When we replace your roof or siding, we can put on new seamless gutters and downspouts as part of the same project. See gutters with your new roof.
From the older homes near the Milton House to the newest streets on the edge of town, we serve all of Milton. Call (815) 624-6278 for a free consultation and roof estimate.

Milton Local Details
The Milton House
Milton’s best-known building is the Milton House at 18 S. Janesville Street. Joseph Goodrich built it in 1844 and 1845 as a hexagonal stagecoach inn, pouring a grout mix into wooden forms, which makes it one of the first concrete buildings in the country. A tunnel runs from its basement to the log cabin behind it, and it’s a documented stop on the Underground Railroad. It became Rock County’s only National Historic Landmark in 1998, and it’s the only Underground Railroad site in Wisconsin you can tour.
Hail and Wind in Rock County
From 2010 through 2025, NOAA counts 81 hail reports in Rock County, 62 of them an inch or larger, along with 124 severe thunderstorm wind reports. Hail that size can bruise shingles without leaving anything you’d notice from the driveway. After a storm, look for dents in your gutters, downspouts and roof vents, then call (815) 624-6278 for a free inspection. See hail damage roof repair in Milton.
Hiring a Roofer in Milton

Milton Roofing Questions

Do I need a permit to reroof or reside a house in Milton?
Yes. Remodeling and siding need building permits, among other projects. Martin Exteriors pulls and handles all required permits and schedules the inspection.
Are you a certified Wisconsin dwelling contractor?
Yes, #1436189. In Illinois we hold roofing license 104.017824.
How often does hail hit Rock County?
Often enough to plan for. NOAA lists 81 hail reports in Rock County from 2010 through 2025, 62 of them an inch or larger.
What does a free roof inspection in Milton include?
We get on the roof, look at the flashing, vents and attic, take photos and go over them with you. There’s no obligation.
How long does a reroof take in Milton?
Most Milton homes are finished in one day on site. Older, steeper houses near downtown can take longer, and weather can move the schedule.
Can you help with a hail insurance claim in Milton?
Yes, we help with your insurance claim. Since 2006 we’ve helped thousands of homeowners through roof claims. We document the damage, can meet the adjuster at your Milton house and walk through the insurer’s estimate with you. We’re a roofing contractor, not a public adjuster.
Can you tarp my roof after a storm?
Yes. Emergency tarping can be done within 24 hours.
Should my Milton roof be repaired or replaced?
It comes down to age, how much of the roof is worn and what the deck looks like. A single damaged area on a roof with plenty of life left gets a repair. When shingles are worn across every slope, or the same roof keeps leaking in new places, a replacement usually costs you less over time. You’ll see the photos before you decide.
What warranties come with a new Milton roof?
Our workmanship warranty, plus the GAF warranty you choose. As a Master Elite contractor (fewer than 2% of roofers), we can offer a 50-year GAF warranty with 30 years on workmanship on a qualifying roof (GAF eligibility rules apply). GAF eligibility requirements, coverage, terms and restrictions apply.
Can you take off old asbestos siding on a Milton house?
Yes. Our own crews are licensed for asbestos siding removal. They take it off and haul it away, then the new vinyl or James Hardie siding goes on.
Is financing available in Wisconsin?
Yes, as low as $149/month for qualified buyers. See our financing options page.
