What Hail Does to a Shingle

Hail rarely punches a hole straight through. The damage is usually quieter than that, and it shortens the life of the roof.

Granule loss. Hail knocks off the granules that protect asphalt shingles from the sun. You might see them piled up at the downspouts.
Bruising. A soft spot where the mat underneath has been crushed, even though the surface looks okay.
Cracks and fractures. Bigger stones can split a shingle outright.
Dented metal. Vents, flashing and pipe collars dent and bend, which can open a path for water.
Siding damage. Vinyl can crack or chip, and aluminum siding dents.

Left alone, hail damage tends to show up later as leaks, sometimes months after the storm.

Signs to Check After a Hailstorm

From the ground, look at the soft metal first: dents in roof vents, the mailbox, a grill lid or the car tell you how big the hail was. Check the siding for chips or cracks on the side the storm came from. Look at your downspout outlets for loose granules. Then let us get on the roof and look at the shingles up close.

Straight answer. We show you what we found and tell you whether it looks like enough damage to talk to your insurer. If it isn’t, we’ll say so.

Yes. Bruising and granule loss usually can’t be seen from the ground. Dented vents or siding are a good clue, but a close-up inspection is the only way to know for sure.

What size hail damages a roof?

It depends on the shingle, its age and the wind behind the storm. Smaller hail can still knock granules off an older roof. That’s why we inspect instead of guessing.
