Around Caledonia, a hailstorm can hit more than one roof on a property: the house, and maybe a detached garage, a shed or a pole building too. Martin Exteriors Roofing & Siding inspects all of them for free, photographs each hit and gives you a written plan. Our Roscoe office is about 15 minutes away by way of Route 173, and (815) 624-6278 is answered 24/7. If a storm has opened your roof, we can tarp within 24 hours.
A Tiny Village and the Acreage Around It
The village of Caledonia has only about 120 homes. Its Census estimate carries a margin of about 50 homes, so we treat it as a rough sign that most houses in the village predate 1940. ZIP 61011, which takes in the countryside around the village, is a steadier guide: Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put its median home at 1992, with about 38% built in the 1990s and a median of about 8 rooms.
Boone County’s 2020 comprehensive plan explains where those homes came from. Between 1990 and 2010, subdivisions of 1 to 5 acre lots with curving streets went up on unincorporated land west of Caledonia. So hail here lands on two very different roofs: old frame houses in the village, and large acreage homes that may still have the shingles they were built with.
What Hail Does to Each
- Old village houses. A roof that has been reroofed over itself has a soft cushion of old shingles under the top layer. Hail can crack that top layer more easily than it would on a single layer nailed to solid wood.
- 1990s and 2000s acreage homes. Shingles 20 to 30 years old have lost flexibility and much of their grit. The same storm that only scuffs a new roof can bruise these through to the mat.
- Big roofs with many planes. Hips, valleys and dormers face every direction, so a roof can be marked hard on the side that faced the storm and barely touched on the other. We check each plane on its own.
Every Roof on the Property, One Visit
Tell us what else is out there when you call. We can inspect a detached garage, a shop, a shed or a barn on the same trip and give each building its own set of photos. On a metal roof, we look past the dents to the seams, fasteners and panel edges and tell you plainly whether the damage is only cosmetic. If an outbuilding roof needs replacing, we can quote metal roofing or shingles.
Look Before You Call
You can learn a lot from the ground after a storm. Stay off the ladder and check for:
- Shingle grit collected at the downspout outlets or washed across the driveway.
- Dents in roof vents, chimney caps and the fins of the air conditioner on the storm side.
- Fresh light spots on a deck, fence, mailbox or grill cover, which show the size of the stones and the direction they came from.
- Holes or cracks in the siding on the wall that faced the storm.
Take photos of what you find and send them when you book. We still climb the roof, go into the attic and photograph the shingles up close before we tell you anything.
Repair the Hits or Replace the Roof
When the damage is limited and the roof is otherwise sound, we repair it with matched shingles, new vents or flashing, and a check of the decking beneath. When most planes are bruised, or the village house already has more than one layer, a new roof can be the better value. We tear off to the deck, replace soft wood, put ice and water shield on every eave and in the valleys, and install a complete GAF system, with GAF Class 4 impact resistant shingles as an option. Most roofs are replaced in a day; a large acreage home can take longer, and we tell you that up front. Payments run as low as $149/month for qualified buyers.
Fewer than 2% of roofing contractors are GAF Master Elite, and Martin is one of them. That standing lets a qualifying new roof carry a lifetime GAF warranty with up to 30 years on workmanship (GAF eligibility rules apply). See our GAF warranty page.
Siding the Storm Hit
Hail that bruises a roof can also break siding. We replace the damaged boards or sections and never patch them with sealant or filler. James Hardie fiber cement is our first choice, and vinyl is the other main option. See Caledonia siding repair.

Caledonia Hail Damage FAQ
Hail hit my house and my pole building. Can you check both in one visit?
Yes. Tell us about every building when you call. Each one gets its own photos and findings, so you can see what was damaged and what was not.
Why does one side of my roof look worse than the other?
Wind drives hail at an angle, so the planes that faced the storm can take most of the hits. That is why we inspect each plane separately instead of judging the whole roof from one side.
My roof still has its original 1990s shingles. Does that change anything after hail?
It can. Older shingles are stiffer and have less grit left, so hail that would only scuff a new roof can bruise them through to the mat.
Are hail dents on a metal shed roof a problem?
Sometimes they are only cosmetic. We check the seams, fasteners and panel edges and tell you whether the dents affect how the roof sheds water.
