About Rockton, Illinois
Rockton is one of the oldest towns in Winnebago County. Stephen Mack already had his trading post at Macktown, across the Rock River, when Capt. William Talcott and his son Thomas arrived in 1835. The Talcotts settled on the other side of the river, and their settlement became Rockton. The family dug the mill race by hand and had a sawmill and a grist mill running by 1838.
Close your eyes and picture the quintessential historic downtown and you will see Rockton. That history is still easy to find downtown. The Old Stone Church was finished in 1850, the Talcott-Olson House on West Chapel Street dates to 1843, and the Talcott Free Library is in a building put up in 1854. Rockton has gained a Historic Preservation Ordinance which ensures any restoration to its local landmarks are appropriate for the period of the original architectural style. Pioneers to this area quarried local limestone and old growth wood to create these sturdy structures. The oldest of which was built in 1838, by Martin Ormsby, one of the first men to construct a sawmill.
