Two Different Rocktons

Drive down Main Street and Rockton looks like an old river town, and in the middle it is. But most of the houses in the village are a lot newer than the downtown. Census estimates put the median Rockton home at 1996, and about 58% of homes went up between 1990 and 2009.

That splits our Rockton siding work into two very different jobs. Out in the neighborhoods off Blackhawk Boulevard, Prairie Hill Road and Hononegah Road, it’s usually builder-grade vinyl that has been on the house for 20 or 30 years. Closer to Main Street and Chapel Street, it’s older frame houses with trim, porches and sometimes two or three layers of siding stacked on each other.

Builder Vinyl From the 1990s and 2000s

The vinyl that went on Rockton’s newer homes was mostly thin panels in a short list of light colors. After a few decades of sun, the south and west walls are usually faded, and the panels near the ground are often cracked from mower stones and snow shovels. On a windy day, a loose bottom course is the first thing to go.

These are straightforward houses to re-side. The walls are usually flat and the sheathing is usually solid, so most jobs take 1 to 2 days. We take the old panels off, fix any soft spots we find, and most homes get new house wrap before the new siding goes on.

Older Homes Near the Historic Downtown

Rockton has real history. The Talcott-Olson House on West Chapel Street dates to 1843 and the Old Stone Church was finished in 1850, and plenty of the houses around them have been re-sided more than once since. When we strip one of those walls, we often find original wood clapboard under aluminum or an older layer of vinyl. Sometimes it’s asbestos cement shingles. We’re licensed for asbestos siding removal and handle it with our own crews, so you don’t need a second company for that part.

If your home is a local landmark or sits in Rockton’s historic district, tell us at the first visit. We check with the Village before we order anything, so the profile and look you pick are ones that will be approved.

Hail Does Hit Siding Here

Rockton siding takes real hits. NOAA’s Storm Events Database lists wind-driven hail about 1.25 inches across that damaged the vinyl siding on a Rockton home on November 10, 2020, so hail season doesn’t always end in summer. Hail 1.5 inches across was reported near Rockton on April 4, 2023, and 1-inch hail fell near the village on April 17, 2026.

After a storm, walk around the house and look at the west and north walls first. Cracks, holes and chalky round marks on vinyl are the usual signs. We’ll inspect the siding and the roof for free, take photos, and tell you if it’s worth an insurance claim. We’ve helped thousands of Rockford-area homeowners through roof claims, and if it isn’t worth filing, we’ll say so. See storm damage repair.

Vinyl or James Hardie for a Rockton House

Vinyl siding from Mastic and Norandex is what most Rockton homeowners in the newer subdivisions choose. Today’s panels are thicker than the builder grade that came off, there are far more colors, and insulated vinyl can make a big two-story feel tighter on a January night. It never needs paint.

James Hardie fiber cement is the one we usually suggest for the older homes downtown. It has the look of painted wood lap siding, which suits those houses, and it’s heavier and handles hail and impact better than vinyl. It costs more up front and is backed by James Hardie’s own product warranty. Some homeowners split it: Hardie on the street side, vinyl on the back.

Roof and Siding Together

A lot of Rockton’s 1990s and 2000s homes got their roof and siding the same summer, which means both are aging out together. If that’s your house, we can plan both so the trim, flashing and colors all match. See our Rockton roofing page, our Roscoe siding page for the neighborhoods just east of you, and the siding installation overview.

Rockton Siding FAQ

Do you install siding in Rockton?

Yes. Rockton is about 10 minutes from our main office at 11704 Main St in Roscoe, and we side homes all over the village, from the neighborhoods off Hononegah Road to the older houses near Main Street.

My Rockton house was built in the late 1990s. Is the siding due?

It may be. Builder-grade vinyl from that era is often faded, brittle or loose at the bottom by now. We’ll look at it for free and tell you whether it needs a few panels or the whole house.

My house is in the historic district. Can I still get new siding?

Usually, yes. Tell us at the first visit and Martin Exteriors checks with the Village before ordering, so the siding you choose fits what the Village will approve.

What if there is asbestos siding under my old siding?

We’re licensed for asbestos siding removal and do it with our own crews, so it’s part of the same job.

How long does a siding job take in Rockton?

Most siding jobs take 1 to 2 days. Older homes with several layers or soft sheathing can take longer, and we’ll tell you up front.

Does hail damage siding in Rockton?

Yes. NOAA’s Storm Events Database lists wind-driven hail that damaged the vinyl siding on a Rockton home on November 10, 2020. After a storm, we’ll inspect the siding and roof for free.
