Founded in 1853 by Robert J. Cross, Roscoe is a community its residents are proud to be a part of. Just one hour from Madison and within ninety minutes of Milwaukee and Chicago you couldn’t ask for a better location. Boasting the highest rated school and the second lowest crime rate in the county, surpassed only by neighboring Rockton, it is not surprising the population of Roscoe IL has grown over forty percent within the last ten years. Grab your bike or take a stroll on their ever expanding approximately 6 mile trail, Stone Bridge. Take in the wildflowers while passing by the historic double arch bridge as to which it is named, built in 1882. Once the Chicago and Northwestern railroad line, Stone Bridge is one of Roscoe residents’ favorite leisure destinations. With a population of just over ten thousand, you will feel the comfort of a small town yet have plenty of festivals and local events to attend.

Roscoe Homes and Roof Age

Most of Roscoe was built in the last few decades. Census estimates put the median Roscoe home at 2001, and about 80% of the homes in the village went up between 1980 and 2009, 42% of them in the 2000s alone. Builders in those years almost always used standard asphalt shingles, and the National Association of Home Builders puts the life of an asphalt roof at about 20 years. That means a lot of Roscoe roofs from the 1990s and 2000s are at or past that age now, many of them still with the builder’s original shingles.

About 7 in 10 Roscoe homes are owner-occupied, and most of the subdivisions here have the same few roof styles. When we replace a roof in one of them, we pay close attention to attic ventilation and the ice and water barrier along the eaves, because those two details decide a lot about how long the new roof lasts through a Stateline winter.

Hail, Wind and Tornadoes in Roscoe

Roscoe has had more than its share of storms. According to NOAA’s Storm Events Database, an EF-1 tornado on April 17, 2026 tracked east along Roscoe Road, entered the west side of Roscoe and was strongest in the Hawks Point, Crystal Hills and Oxford Commons subdivisions. Several homes there had parts of their roofs torn off and siding and fascia peeled away, and some garage doors were blown in. The tornado then knocked down power poles along Gleasman Road before crossing the Rock River.

It wasn’t the first. On March 31, 2023, an EF-1 tornado that started on the north side of Rockford tracked through the west side of Machesney Park and lifted over Roscoe, leaving roof damage on homes along the way. On May 22, 2011, a brief EF-1 tornado touched down between Route 251 and I-90 just north of Rockton Road and blew in a large garage door at the Roscoe Fire Station. Quarter-size hail and 70 mph gusts hit the Roscoe area on November 10, 2020, and 1-inch hail fell in Roscoe on April 4, 2023.

Across Winnebago County, NOAA lists 112 hail reports and 195 severe thunderstorm wind reports from 2010 through 2025.
