How Wind Damages a Roof

Wind doesn’t hit a roof evenly. Edges, ridges and corners take the most uplift, so that’s usually where damage starts.

Lifted or missing shingles. Wind gets under a shingle edge and peels it back or rips it off.
Creased shingles. A shingle that flapped in the wind and laid back down often has a crease across it. It may look fine from the yard, but the seal is broken and the next storm can take it.
Broken seal strips. The adhesive that holds each course down lets go, even when nothing is missing yet.
Exposed underlayment or decking. Once shingles are gone, nothing is keeping rain out but the layers underneath.
Damaged ridge caps and flashing. The peak and the metal around chimneys, walls and vents take a beating.
Fallen limbs and debris. Branches can puncture shingles or crack the deck.

What to Look for From the Ground

Please don’t climb up there. You can learn a lot from the yard: shingle pieces in the grass, dark patches where shingles used to be, a ridge line that looks ragged, or flashing bent away from the chimney. Inside, check the ceilings and the attic for stains or damp insulation. Take photos of whatever you see, with the date.

What to Do After a Windstorm

Stay safe. Stay off the roof and away from downed lines.
Take photos. Ground-level photos help, but a close-up inspection catches what you can’t see.

Sometimes wind damage is limited to one slope or a few spots, and a repair is the right call.
