Permits and Ice Barrier in Rockford

Roofing work in Rockford needs a permit, and the roofer must hold an Illinois roofing license. Martin Exteriors pulls and handles all required permits. On a reroof, code can also require ice barrier at the eaves, at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall, measured horizontally. That strip helps protect against leaks caused by ice dams. Siding needs its own permit. In a Rockford historic district, exterior changes visible from the street need a Certificate of Appropriateness before the permit is issued. We handle that too.

Ice Dams and Winter Roof Problems

Rockford winters are hard on roofs, and ice dams cause most of the winter leaks we’re called out for. The ice barrier the city requires helps, but the real cause usually starts in the attic.

Here’s how it happens. Warm air from the house leaks into the attic and heats the roof deck. Snow on the upper roof melts, runs down, and freezes again at the cold edge over the eaves. That ridge of ice keeps growing, and meltwater backs up behind it and works under the shingles. You’ll usually notice it as a water stain on a ceiling or wall near an outside corner of the house.

Signs you may have an ice dam problem:

• Thick icicles hanging from the gutters, especially the same spots every year
• A ridge of ice along the roof edge with snow piled behind it
• Stains or peeling paint on ceilings and walls along exterior walls
• Frost or wet insulation in the attic

Please don’t climb up and chip at the ice. It damages the shingles and it’s dangerous. Pulling snow off the lower few feet of roof with a roof rake from the ground is safer. Then let us look at why it’s happening. The long-term fix is usually better attic ventilation, sealing the spots where warm air gets into the attic, and making sure the eaves have proper ice and water shield the next time the roof is replaced.

Siding Company

Plenty of older Rockford homes are still wearing tired aluminum, or vinyl that’s cracked and faded. New siding tightens up the house and makes it look cared for again.
