Attic Ventilation Installation in Rockford, IL
An attic that can’t breathe is hard on a roof. In winter it helps ice dams form along your eaves. In summer it bakes your shingles from underneath. Martin Exteriors installs attic ventilation for homes across Rockford, Roscoe, Loves Park, and Machesney Park, either as a standalone job or as part of a roof replacement.
Why attic ventilation matters in Northern Illinois
Your attic needs cool, dry outside air coming in low at the soffits and warm, moist air going out high at the ridge. When that flow works, four things happen:
- Fewer ice dams. A cold roof deck keeps snow from melting and refreezing at the edge.
- A cooler attic in summer. Less heat building up under the shingles.
- Less moisture. Steam from showers, cooking, and breathing leaves before it turns into frost, mold, or wet sheathing.
- Longer shingle life. Heat and moisture both wear out a roof faster.
Signs your attic isn’t ventilated properly
- Ice dams or big icicles along the eaves every winter
- Frost on nails or on the underside of the roof deck on cold mornings
- Musty smells, dark stains, or mold on attic wood
- Upstairs rooms that stay hot in summer, and higher cooling bills
- Shingles curling or wearing out early

Ventilation we install
- Ridge vents. A continuous vent along the peak that lets hot air out evenly.
- Soffit intake vents. Openings under the eaves that let fresh air in. Without intake, exhaust vents don’t do much.
- Box/static vents. Individual roof vents for roofs where a ridge vent doesn’t fit.
- Powered and solar attic fans. For the occasional attic where passive vents alone can’t keep up. A fan has to be paired with enough intake, or it can pull conditioned air out of the house, so we only recommend one when it makes sense.
- Balanced intake and exhaust. We size the system so the air coming in matches the air going out, so the vents work together instead of fighting each other.
How ventilation helps prevent ice dams, and what it can’t fix alone
Ice dams start when warm air from the house heats the roof deck. Snow melts, water runs down to the cold eave, and it freezes there. The ice builds up, and meltwater backs up under the shingles. If an ice dam has already caused a leak, see ice dam roof leak repair.
Good ventilation keeps the roof deck closer to the outside temperature, so less snow melts in the first place. It isn’t the whole fix, though. The University of Minnesota Extension points out that stopping warm air leaks from the house and having enough insulation are just as important. We handle the ventilation side. For insulation and air sealing, we recommend working with an insulation contractor. When both are done right, ice dams usually stop being a yearly problem. For more tips, read our post on preventing ice dams and our cold weather roof care guide.
Ventilation during a roof replacement
A roof replacement is the easiest time to fix ventilation. The shingles are already off, so adding ridge vent and opening up intake is simple. As a GAF Master Elite contractor, we install systems the way the manufacturer specifies. GAF is clear about this: its shingle warranty still covers manufacturing defects whatever ventilation you have, but damage caused by inadequate ventilation isn’t covered (GAF’s guide to balanced ventilation). GAF attic ventilation products can also count toward qualifying accessories for some of its enhanced warranties. Most roofs we replace are done in a day, ventilation included. FAQs
What causes ice dams on Rockford roofs, and how do I stop them?
Heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof, and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. Balanced attic ventilation, along with good insulation and air sealing (done by an insulation contractor), is the long-term fix.
How much attic ventilation does a house need?
Enough to balance the air coming in at the soffits with the air going out at the ridge, sized to your attic. A common guideline, which GAF uses, is at least 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 300 square feet of attic floor, split between intake and exhaust. Some local codes call for more, and we work out the right amount for your home during the inspection.
Ridge vents vs box vents: which is better?
On most homes, a ridge vent paired with soffit intake works best because it vents evenly along the whole peak. Box vents are a good option for roofs where a ridge vent won’t fit. Mixing exhaust types on one roof can actually make airflow worse.
If the soffit itself is rotted, sagging or missing, see soffit and fascia repair.
Can poor ventilation void my shingle warranty?
It won’t void it, but it can leave you without coverage. GAF’s warranty still covers manufacturing defects, but it excludes damage caused by inadequate ventilation. That’s why we check your attic before we replace your roof.
Is ice dam damage covered by insurance?
Sometimes. Some homeowners policies cover water damage from ice dams, but coverage depends on your policy and your insurer’s decision. Check with your agent, and call us for an inspection and documentation.
Should I add ventilation when I replace my roof?
Yes, if your attic needs it. It’s the easiest and most cost-effective time to do it, and it helps your new shingles last.
