Soffit and fascia are the boards under and along the edge of your roof. When they rot, sag or crack, water, birds and critters can get in. Martin Exteriors Roofing & Siding repairs and replaces damaged soffit and fascia across the Rockford area, as a job on its own or as part of a new roof or siding. The inspection is free. Call (815) 624-6278.
Soffit and Fascia Repair on Its Own
You do not need a new roof or new siding to call us. If one stretch of fascia is soft, a soffit panel has fallen, or an animal has chewed its way in, we will come out, find the cause and replace the damaged trim. A small repair gets the same care as a full exterior project.
What Soffit and Fascia Do for Your Roof
Fascia is the board that runs along the roof edge. It finishes the edge, closes off the ends of the rafters and helps keep water out of the roof structure. Soffit covers the underside of the overhang between the fascia and the wall. Vented soffit also lets air into the attic, which is part of how the attic breathes. Learn more about soffit vents and attic airflow.
Signs Your Soffit or Fascia Needs Work
- Fascia boards that feel soft or have peeling paint
- Soffit panels that sag, hang loose or are missing
- Stains or dark streaks along the roof edge
- Nests, droppings or chewed openings at the overhang
- Paint on the trim that keeps failing no matter how often it is redone
- Woodpecker holes in the trim. See woodpecker damage repair.
How We Repair It
We replace the damaged boards and panels. We never cover rot with caulk, filler or sealant, because the rot keeps spreading underneath and the problem comes back.
Before the new trim goes on, we find out why the old trim failed. Common causes are a leak at the roof edge, ice dams, a missing drip edge or poor attic airflow. If the roof edge is the problem, we fix that too, so the new soffit and fascia last. See roof repair and ice dam roof leak repair.
Soffit and Fascia With a New Roof or Siding
If you are already planning a project, it is the natural time to replace the trim. The roof edge is open during a roof replacement, and soffit and fascia are part of the finished look of a siding job. We match the trim to James Hardie siding or vinyl siding so the whole house looks finished.
Two of our projects show it. On a Beloit siding refresh, fascia work was included so the trim matches. On a Lake Geneva lake home remodel, the plan included matching trim work such as soffit and fascia.
If you are adding gutters with your roof or siding project, we make sure the fascia behind them is solid first.

Soffit and Fascia FAQ
What is the difference between soffit and fascia?
Fascia is the board that runs along the edge of the roof. Soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the wall of the house.
Do you do soffit and fascia repair on its own, without a new roof or siding?
Yes. We take standalone soffit and fascia repair jobs. You do not need a roof or siding project to have us fix damaged trim.
Can you replace just the damaged fascia boards?
Yes. We replace the damaged boards or sections and match them to the rest of your trim. We do not patch rot with caulk or filler.
Why is my fascia rotting?
Usually water is getting behind it at the roof edge. Common causes are worn flashing, a missing drip edge and ice dams. We check the roof edge during the free inspection so the new fascia lasts.
Should I replace soffit and fascia when I get a new roof or siding?
It is the easiest time to do it. The roof edge is already open during a roof job, and the trim is part of a siding job, so it all matches when it is done.
Do vented soffits help my attic?
Yes. Vented soffits let air in low so it can leave near the ridge. That airflow helps the attic stay dry. See attic ventilation.
Is the inspection free?
Yes. Inspections are free for everyone.
