The 2000s Wave in Rockton’s Neighborhoods
According to Census Bureau estimates for 2020 to 2024, roughly 37% of Rockton’s homes were built from 2000 through 2009, the busiest decade on record for the village. Away from the older streets downtown, the neighborhoods off Hononegah Road, Prairie Hill Road and Blackhawk Boulevard include many houses from that era. Those roofs are now roughly 17 to 26 years old.
Roofs that went on in the same few years tend to come due together. The first signs usually show on south- and west-facing slopes, where sun and wind hit hardest: shingles that look dull and flat, edges starting to lift, and bare patches where the granules have washed away. An attic vented at the builder minimum speeds all of that up.
Tall Two-Stories and Long Open Slopes
Many of those newer homes are tall two-stories with long, open slopes and a garage roof tucked against the main wall. On a replacement, those details get extra care. The starter strip and the first courses along the eaves and rakes are where a gust starts peeling a roof back, so we set and nail them to the manufacturer’s specifications. Where a lower roof meets a second-story wall, new step flashing and a kick-out at the bottom keep water from running behind the siding.
1980s Homes on Their Second Roof
About 14% of Rockton homes went up in the 1980s. Many of those houses are already on their second roof, and some of those replacements went right over the original shingles. When we tear off a roof like that, both layers come off and we look closely at the decking, which can soften or dip after years under the extra weight.
Older Homes Near Main Street and Chapel Street
Rockton’s older core around Main Street and Chapel Street, near the Rock River, is a different job. Some houses there date to the 1800s, with steep roofs, chimneys and board decking under more than one layer of old shingles. Tear-off shows what is really there, and your written estimate already lists how replaced decking is priced. The chimney gets fresh flashing tied into the new shingles.
Mature trees shade a lot of these lots. Before tear-off we look at the limbs over the roof, and tarps go over beds and shrubs so debris lands where we can haul it away.
What Every New Rockton Roof Gets
We strip the roof to bare decking and swap out any soft boards. Ice and water shield goes on every eave and in the valleys, then the underlayment, metal drip edge, fresh flashing, vents and the GAF shingles you pick, since GAF is our standard brand. Holding GAF Master Elite status, which fewer than 2% of roofing contractors earn, means we can offer a 50-year GAF warranty with up to 30 years on workmanship on qualifying roofs (GAF eligibility rules apply). We also check attic intake and exhaust and add venting where it falls short. See attic ventilation.
Most roofs are done in a day. A big two-story or a house with several old layers can take longer, and weather can move the start date. Curious what drives the cost? Our guide to roof replacement cost breaks it down.

Rockton Roof Replacement FAQ
Which shingle brand do you install on Rockton roofs?
GAF is our standard shingle, and our GAF Master Elite warranties are built around it. We install Owens Corning only when a homeowner asks for it or needs it to match existing shingles.
What do you find under the shingles on Rockton’s older downtown homes?
Often board decking instead of plywood, more than one layer of old shingles and chimney flashing that has been patched over the years. We photograph it, replace soft boards at the price in your written estimate and put new flashing on with the new roof.
Can you replace a skylight when you replace my Rockton roof?
Yes. We are VELUX certified, and the roof is already open, so it is the easiest time to swap an old skylight and flash the new one into the new shingles. See our skylight installation page.
How do you protect landscaping on a wooded Rockton lot?
We check the limbs over the roof before work starts, cover beds and shrubs with tarps and haul all debris away. Before we leave, we sweep the lawn with a magnet to pick up nails.
Why do the south and west slopes on my Rockton house wear out first?
They take the most sun and the most wind. Heat dries out the asphalt and loosens granules, and wind works at the seal strips along the edges, so those slopes often show bare spots and lifted edges years before the others.
