Hail Is the Big One in Rockton
NOAA’s Storm Events Database lists 1.5-inch hail in Rockton on April 4, 2023. On November 10, 2020, wind-driven hail about 1.25 inches across, with gusts estimated near 70 mph, damaged the vinyl siding on a home just north of the village. More recently, 1-inch hail fell west-northwest of Rockton on April 17, 2026.
Hail repair is different from most repairs, because the damage is rarely in one spot. Here’s how it usually shows up:
- Bruises. Soft spots where hail cracked the mat under the granules. Up close they look like dark circles, and you can’t see them from the ground.
- Granule loss. Bare patches let the sun break down the asphalt faster, so the spot wears out years early.
- Dented metal. Roof vents, flashing and metal caps dent before shingles crack, which is why we check them first.
- Damage on one side. Wind-driven hail, like the November 2020 storm, hits the slope facing the wind hardest, so one side of a roof can be damaged while the other looks new.

You can do a first check from the ground after a hailstorm. Look for fresh dents on the metal caps of roof vents, dings on the mailbox or patio furniture, and splatter marks on painted surfaces like a deck rail. If those took hits, the shingles probably did too, even if they look normal from below. Please don’t climb up to look.
Wind and Trees
Rockton’s mature trees and open river valley make wind damage the other big risk. NOAA reports a garage that collapsed in severe winds in Rockton on June 17, 2014, a storm in 2021 brought down a large limb in the village, and another in 2024 damaged trees just west of it. Rockton Homes: Mostly 1990s and 2000s
Census estimates put the median Rockton home at 1996, with about 59% built between 1990 and 2009. Roofs from those years tend to need the same handful of repairs: cracked pipe boots, nail pops, loose ridge vents and flashing along second-story walls. The village also has an older core, with roughly 15% of homes built before 1960, where we more often run into chimney flashing, plank decking and roofs that were layered over instead of torn off.
