A Town Built Around the Milton House
Milton’s history starts with Joseph Goodrich, who founded the town and built the Milton House in 1844 and 1845. It’s a hexagonal inn made of grout, an early poured concrete, and it’s now a National Historic Landmark and a documented stop on the Underground Railroad. Milton still has other grout buildings from that era.
The masonry buildings don’t need siding, but plenty of the frame houses on the older streets around them do. Many of those homes have been re-sided more than once, and we often find wood lap siding under aluminum or vinyl when we open the walls. Sometimes there are asbestos cement shingles too. We’re licensed for asbestos siding removal and use our own crews for it.
Older Frame Houses
On an older Milton house, the prep is most of the work. With the walls stripped, bad sheathing gets replaced, low spots get shimmed so the new panels run straight, and the house is usually wrapped fresh. Old houses rarely have much insulation in the walls, so insulated vinyl is worth a look if the house is drafty.
James Hardie fiber cement usually suits these homes best. Fiber cement reads like painted wood from the street, and its weight is what lets it take Rock County hail better than vinyl. It’s the bigger investment, and James Hardie’s own product warranty comes with it.
Newer Neighborhoods
Milton has grown, and the newer neighborhoods mostly have builder-grade vinyl that has started to fade and crack. Those houses are simpler to side, and most jobs take 1 to 2 days. Vinyl siding from Mastic and Norandex is the budget-friendly choice there. You never paint it, the color range is far wider than the builder offered, and a good install can last 20 to 40 years.
Picking a Look for an Older House
On an older Milton home, the siding profile matters as much as the color. A narrow lap with real corner boards and simple trim is what most of these houses had originally, and matching that look keeps the house from looking like a remodel. Bring us old photos of the house if you have them. We’ll match the reveal and trim width as closely as we can, and we bring full-size samples so you can see them outside in daylight before you decide.
Newer homes have more freedom. A darker body color with white trim, or board-and-batten on the gables, can change how a plain house reads from the street without changing anything else.
Rock County Weather
Rock County gets plenty of hail. Rock County logged 81 hail reports between 2010 and 2025 in NOAA’s Storm Events Database, and 62 of those stones measured an inch or more. Add the spring and summer windstorms and the odd tornado, and older siding doesn’t stand much of a chance.
When a Milton storm passes, we look over the siding and the roof at no charge, photograph what we find, and help with your insurance claim if it’s worth filing. We’ve helped thousands of homeowners through roof claims, and we’ll be honest when an insurance claim isn’t worth it. See hail damage repair.
