An Old Village With Newer Neighbors
Cherry Valley was settled in 1835 and incorporated in 1857, and some of the blocks of houses built in the 1800s still surround the small brick buildings downtown. Around that old center are newer subdivisions, and the village has long drawn families who commute to work in the Chicago suburbs.
So a Cherry Valley siding estimate can mean two very different houses. One is a century-old frame home that has been re-sided a couple of times. The other is a newer house still wearing its first coat of builder vinyl. We’ll treat them differently, because they need different things.
The Older Homes Near Downtown
On the older houses, the first question is what’s already on the walls. We often find original wood lap siding under aluminum or vinyl, and sometimes asbestos cement shingles. These homes usually look best in James Hardie fiber cement. It looks like painted lap boards, weighs far more than vinyl and takes hail better. The board costs more than vinyl, and James Hardie warrants it directly.
Newer Homes and Builder Vinyl
On the newer side of the village, it’s mostly vinyl that has faded on the sunny walls and cracked low on the house. Vinyl siding from Mastic and Norandex is a good replacement: thicker than what the builder used, with a much bigger color selection, and installed right it often lasts 20 to 40 years. Most of these jobs take 1 to 2 days.
