Two Kinds of Houses, Two Kinds of Repairs
Census estimates for a village of about 400 homes are rough, but they sketch Capron clearly. Close to one home in five predates 1940, and about 48% were built from 1990 through 2009, with the median home at 1988. That puts very old houses and fairly young ones in the same small town.
The repairs look different on each, so here’s how we approach them.
On Older Capron Houses
- Check the layers first. If a second layer went over the first, we confirm the nails will reach solid wood before we patch anything.
- Rebuild flashing instead of tarring it. Chimney and wall flashing on old houses has usually been patched before. We pull the old patch and install new metal.
- Look under the boards. Plank decking can hide rot near the eaves, where ice and meltwater sit longest.
On 1990s and 2000s Homes
- Boots, vents and fasteners. Rubber, plastic and sealant give out sooner than shingles, so leaks on younger roofs often start at a pipe boot, a vent cap or an exposed nail head.
- Tabs that wind has worked loose. As the adhesive under each tab weakens, gusts can lift and fold shingles along the ridge and the edges.
- Builder attics. Blocked soffits or a bath fan venting indoors can rot the deck from underneath. See attic ventilation.
Hail and Wind Across Northern Boone County
Capron is surrounded by open fields, and NOAA’s Storm Events Database lists hail and damaging wind in and near the village since 2010. Most hail reports there were small, but one storm brought stones close to golf ball size, along with gusts that snapped large branches and trees near Hunter Road. Other entries describe trees blown onto power lines, a car and a road.

Capron Roof Repair FAQ
Where do roofs on 1990s and 2000s Capron homes usually leak first?
Most often at pipe boots, vent caps and exposed nails, because rubber, plastic and sealant wear out before the shingles do. Those are small repairs when caught early.
Can you patch an older roof that’s been patched before?
Usually. We remove old tar patches rather than adding to them, install new flashing or shingles, and check the decking underneath. When a roof has been patched so many times that more patches won’t stick, the photos will make that plain.
Can small hail damage my roof?
On a newer roof, small hail rarely does much. On an aging roof, even small stones can knock loose grit the shingles can’t spare. A free inspection with photos tells you which you have.
