Siding Repair in Clinton, WI

Clinton’s story starts in 1837, at the edge of open prairie a few miles north of the state line. Martin Exteriors Roofing & Siding repairs siding here by replacing damaged boards or sections, with James Hardie fiber cement first and vinyl as the other main option. We never cover damage with sealant or filler. Our Roscoe office is about 25 minutes away, the inspection is free, and (815) 624-6278 is answered 24/7.

A Village That Moved to the Railroad

The first settlers of the Jefferson Prairie Company arrived in 1837 and built at Clinton Corners, near today’s Highway X and Highway J. When two railroads crossed a short way off in 1856, the settlement moved to the junction, and some buildings went with it. The village’s National Register survey describes the Greek Revival Baptist church being pulled from Clinton Corners on skids by forty yoke of oxen, and notes that moving houses happened again and again in Clinton’s history.

Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the median home in the village at 1969, with about 27% of homes built before 1940. Out in the Town of Clinton around the village, the median is 1962, about 37% of homes predate 1940, and nearly every home is a detached house, many of them on farms.

Older Village Houses: Layers and Old Wood

On streets like Church Street, Mill Street, Milwaukee Street and Front Street, a house can be on its second or third exterior, such as original wood clapboard under aluminum or cement shingles, with vinyl on top. When a damaged spot is opened up, what we find behind it decides the repair. We look for:

  • Rot at the bottom of the wall and around porch roofs, where water has been getting behind the outer layer.
  • Uneven walls. Old houses, and especially ones that have been moved or added onto, rarely have perfectly straight walls. New boards have to follow the wall without telegraphing every wave.
  • Several layers. We repair the layer that is failing, and if the layers behind it are holding water, we tell you and show you photos.

Duplexes and Small Apartment Buildings

About 29% of homes in the village are in buildings with two or more units. If you own one, the siding often gets attention only when a tenant mentions it. Tell us which unit and which wall, and we handle the walk around without anyone needing to be home. Repairs are matched across the whole building so it does not end up with a patchwork front.

Farmhouses on the Prairie

The National Register survey describes Clinton as sitting at the furthest western reach of the prairie of eastern Rock County. The farmhouses around the village stand on that open ground, along roads like State Road 140 and County Road X, with nothing to slow the wind. Windward walls are where panels work loose, wood siding weathers and splits, and corner trim pulls away. We repair the damaged sections and, on walls the wind keeps attacking, suggest James Hardie, which holds up much better than thin vinyl. Engineered wood such as LP SmartSide is available on request.

Newer Homes

About a quarter of village homes went up from 1990 through 2009, and those mostly have their original builder vinyl. Cracked panels from cold weather impacts and loose bottoms are the typical problems, and they are quick when the color is still made.

Clinton Siding Repair FAQ

My older Clinton house has several layers of siding. Can you repair just the damaged part?

Yes. We open the damaged area, check each layer behind it, repair the one that is failing, and show you photos if the layers behind it are holding water.

My walls are not straight. Will new siding show every wave?

We set new boards to follow the wall so the repair blends in. On very uneven walls, we talk through options at the inspection.

I own a duplex in Clinton. Do tenants need to be home?

No. Everything we need to see is on the outside. You get the photos and the repair plan, and the tenants never have to be there.

The wind keeps pulling siding off my farmhouse. What do you suggest?

We repair the damaged sections and often suggest James Hardie on the windward walls, since it holds up much better than thin vinyl.
