What Is Under the Siding on Older Machesney Park Homes
The oldest neighborhoods in Machesney Park went up in the postwar decades, and plenty of those houses are on their second or third exterior by now. When we pull the siding on one, we find a little of everything: aluminum over wood lap, vinyl over aluminum, and on some of the oldest homes, asbestos cement shingles that were the popular upgrade of their day.
You don’t need to know what’s on your walls before you call. We’re licensed for asbestos siding removal and use our own crews for it, so whatever is under there comes off as part of the job. Once the walls are bare, we fix soft sheathing and most homes get new house wrap.
Brick Fronts and Sided Gables
A lot of Machesney Park ranches have brick or stone across the front and siding only on the sides, the back and the gables. That changes the job. There’s less siding to buy, but the places where siding meets brick need careful trim and flashing so water can’t get behind them. Those are the spots we look at first on an estimate, because that’s where old jobs usually leak.
If you’re only re-siding part of the house, we’ll pick a color that works with your brick and your roof together, not just one or the other. We bring full-size samples so you can hold them against the brick outside.
Split-Levels and Raised Ranches
The village grew fast in the later decades of the last century, and the split-levels and raised ranches from that boom are usually simpler houses to side, often split-levels and raised ranches with straight walls, so most jobs there take 1 to 2 days. The usual problem is first-generation vinyl that has gone brittle, or aluminum that has dented and chalked. Neither is worth patching for long.
Storms Come Through Here
On November 22, 2010, an EF-2 tornado tracked from Loves Park up through Caledonia, Poplar Grove and Capron. On March 31, 2023, another tornado that started on the north side of Rockford crossed the west side of Machesney Park before lifting over Roscoe. Strong wind is how siding gets peeled back, so every panel we put on is locked in and nailed with room to move.
After a storm, we’ll check your siding and roof for free, photograph what we find, and help with your insurance claim if it’s worth filing. We’ve helped thousands of Rockford-area homeowners through roof claims. See wind damage repair.
Vinyl or James Hardie in Machesney Park
Vinyl siding from Mastic and Norandex is the most common choice here and fits a ranch or split-level well. It never needs paint, cleans up with a hose, and installed right it often lasts 20 to 40 years. Insulated panels are worth asking about on older homes that never had much in the walls.
James Hardie fiber cement costs more but is heavier and handles hail and impact better. It’s a good pick on a house along Route 173 or Route 251, where traffic throws stones and grit at the walls. James Hardie backs it with its own product warranty.
Permits and Your Roof
Martin Exteriors pulls and handles all required permits before we start. If your roof is as old as your siding, we can do both and plan the trim and colors together. See our Machesney Park roofing page and the siding installation overview. If you live just over the line, our Loves Park siding page covers your side.

Machesney Park Siding FAQ
My older Machesney Park house has aluminum siding. Can you remove it?
Yes. We take the aluminum off so we can check and repair the wall underneath, and most homes get new house wrap before the new siding goes on.
What if you find asbestos siding?
We’re licensed for asbestos siding removal and handle it with our own crews, so it’s part of the same project.
My house has a brick front. Do I need to re-side the whole thing?
No. Many Machesney Park ranches only have siding on the sides, back and gables. We side what needs it and pay close attention to the trim and flashing where siding meets brick.
Do I need a permit for siding in Machesney Park?
Martin Exteriors pulls and handles all required permits before work starts.
How long does it take to re-side a house in Machesney Park?
Most siding jobs take 1 to 2 days. Removing several old layers or repairing rot can add time, and we’ll tell you up front.
