Roof Repair in Poplar Grove, IL

Most roofs in Poplar Grove went on within a few years of each other, and a lot of them have now reached the age where small problems start. Martin Exteriors Roofing & Siding repairs them from our Roscoe office at 11704 Main St, and we’ve been fixing roofs in Boone and Winnebago counties since 2006. Call (815) 624-6278. Someone answers 24/7.

A Village of First Roofs

Census estimates put the median Poplar Grove home at 2002, and about 57% of the village’s homes were built in the 2000s alone. Count the 1990s too and it’s about 78%. Many of those houses still wear the shingles they were built with. That’s worth knowing, because roofs of the same age, put on with the same builder-grade materials, tend to wear out in the same places.

What Wears Out First on a 20-Year-Old Roof

  • Pipe boots. The rubber collars around plumbing vents dry out and split after years of sun and cold. It’s one of the most common leaks in newer subdivisions, and it’s a small repair when it’s caught early.
  • Seal strips that let go. As shingles age, the adhesive strip holding each tab down weakens. Wind can then lift and crease the tabs, and a creased tab cracks.
  • Exposed nail heads. Ridge caps and some flashing are often face-nailed. When the sealant over those nails dries out, every nail head turns into a pinhole leak.
  • Ridge vents and box vents. Plastic vents get brittle, and a cracked vent cap lets rain blow straight into the attic.
  • Granule loss. When the gritty coating wears thin, the asphalt underneath bakes in the sun and ages faster. Granules washing onto the driveway after rain, or dark bare patches on the shingles, are signs.

One or two of these on an otherwise sound roof calls for a repair, not a new roof.

Wind Across Open Ground

Poplar Grove is surrounded by farm fields, so wind has a long run before it reaches the subdivisions along Route 76 and Poplar Grove Road. Strong gusts out here can peel loose fascia and trim off a house or tear shingles off an aging roof, and hailstorms come through too.

On an aging roof, wind goes after the tabs whose seal has already weakened. Creased shingles along the ridge or on the edges facing open fields are a common sign. See wind damage repair and hail damage repair. For Poplar Grove homes, see our page on hail damage roof repair in Poplar Grove.

Candlewick Lake and Other Wooded Neighborhoods

Candlewick Lake has far more tree cover than the newer subdivisions in the village, so storms there can bring large limbs down onto homes. Beyond limb strikes, shade keeps roofs damp, so moss and debris collect in valleys and along the eaves and lift shingle edges. Candlewick Lake is an association community, and we repair townhome and association roofs. If your association wants to see the plan, our photos and written price make that easy.

Is It Time to Replace Instead?

Being 20-some years old doesn’t mean a roof is finished. We judge the whole roof, not just its age. If the shingles still lie flat, hold their granules and sit on a firm deck, a repair buys more years. If tabs are cracking across whole slopes, leaks keep appearing in new spots or storm damage covers most of the roof, replacement starts to make sense. See roof replacement and our page on roof replacement in Poplar Grove. As a GAF Master Elite contractor (fewer than 2% of roofers), we can offer a 50-year GAF warranty with up to 30 years on workmanship on qualifying roofs (GAF eligibility rules apply). These are roof warranties, not storm-damage coverage.

How We Handle a Repair

Inspection. We walk the roof and then go into the attic, where a lot of trouble in newer homes begins: bath fans that don’t vent outdoors, blocked soffit vents and thin insulation. See attic ventilation.

Documentation. You get photos of what we found and a written price before any work starts.

Repair. We replace damaged shingles with the closest match available, swap worn boots and vents, and seal or replace exposed fasteners.

Poplar Grove Roof Repair FAQ

Why is my newer Poplar Grove roof leaking around a vent pipe?

Most likely the rubber pipe boot has cracked. Boots usually wear out before the shingles do. Replacing one is a small repair if it’s caught before the decking gets wet.

Can wind damage my roof if no shingles came off?

Yes. Strong gusts can break the seal under a shingle tab and crease it without tearing it loose. Creased tabs crack and leak later. We check for creases along the ridge and edges and photograph anything we find.

Do you repair roofs in Candlewick Lake?

Yes. We repair roofs throughout Candlewick Lake and the rest of the Poplar Grove area, including limb damage and moss problems on shaded lots.

Can you repair townhome or association roofs in Poplar Grove?

Yes. We repair townhome and association roofs and give the owners or the board photos and a written price before work is scheduled.

What can I check from the ground after a storm?

Look for shingles or pieces of shingle in the yard, dented vent caps, granules on the driveway, and fascia or trim that has pulled loose. Then call (815) 624-6278 for a free inspection. Please don’t climb up yourself.
