Capron is a small village in the most rural corner of Boone County, with very old houses and fairly young ones on the same streets. When a board on a Capron house fails, Martin Exteriors Roofing & Siding takes it out and puts a new one in, with James Hardie fiber cement first and vinyl as the other main option. No sealant or filler patches. The drive from our Roscoe office is about 25 minutes, the inspection costs nothing, and (815) 624-6278 is answered 24/7.
A Railroad Village With Scandinavian Roots
Capron began as Hebron Station on the Chicago and North Western and was renamed for Colonel John Capron before it incorporated as a village in 1887. The oldest known building in the area is Capron Lutheran Church, built in 1844, and the community has long had close Scandinavian ties. The old Kenosha Division rail line through Capron is now the Long Prairie Trail, running west across the farm country toward Roscoe.
Two Housing Eras, Rough Numbers
Capron has only about 400 homes, so Census estimates for the village come with wide margins. We checked them against the 61012 ZIP code, which covers the village and the farms around it, and it shows the same mix of very old and fairly young homes. In the village, about one home in five predates 1940, about 13% date to the 1950s, and close to half went up from 1990 through 2009. The median home is from 1988, and about 78% of homes are owner occupied.
Old Frame Houses on Wooster, Grove and North Streets
On the original streets, many houses are wood framed and well over 100 years old, and a lot of them have been resided along the way. A repair on one of these can reach past the panel you can see:
- Soft wood at the bottom of the wall, where water has run behind the outer layer for years. We cut out rotted boards and sheathing and fit new boards at the same exposure.
- Old aluminum. It dents and leaves a chalky film, and matching it is hard. We price a spot repair with salvaged panels and a switch of that wall to James Hardie, and you pick.
- Porch and addition seams, where newer parts of the house meet the old walls and water finds the joint.
On these houses James Hardie lap is a good fit for the replacement boards, since it has the look of painted wood and will not rot in the same spot again.
1950s Ranches
The smaller group of 1950s houses in the village are mostly simple, low homes. Siding on houses that age is often aluminum or early vinyl, and it can be brittle. A repair on one is usually quick, but brittle panels can crack as we unlock the ones around the damage, and we tell you about that before we start.
Newer Homes Off Cloud Mist and Shadowbrook Drive
In the neighborhoods off Cloud Mist Drive and Shadowbrook Drive, homes from the 1990s and 2000s still wear their builder vinyl. Out here the fields run right up to the backyards, so wind does most of the damage: panels loose at the bottom lock, pieces missing from the windward side, and cracks from things the wind throws. We replace the damaged panels, relock and renail the rest of the wall, and check the color match before we order.

Capron Siding Repair FAQ
My house on one of the original Capron streets has soft siding near the ground. Can you fix just that part?
Yes. We cut out the rotted boards and sheathing and fit new boards at the same exposure. James Hardie is a good choice there because it does not rot.
Can you repair old aluminum siding?
Sometimes. Matching old aluminum is hard, so we price a spot repair with salvaged panels and a switch of that wall to James Hardie, and you choose.
Wind keeps loosening the siding on my newer Capron home. Why?
Homes near open fields take more wind, and builder vinyl that was not fully locked lets go first. We replace damaged panels and relock and renail the rest of the wall.
Do you really come out to Capron for a small siding repair?
Yes. Capron is about 25 minutes from our Roscoe office, and the inspection is free.
What number should Capron homeowners call?
