When the Wind Peels Shingles

On June 25, 2025, NOAA’s Storm Events Database recorded thunderstorm winds that downed trees, snapped branches and peeled roof shingles in South Beloit. The same storm snapped trees along Prairie Hill Road, flattened corn on the east side of town and rolled an unattached semi-trailer onto its side. That’s typical of what wind does to a roof here: it rarely punches a hole. It peels.

Wind damage tends to build in three steps:

  1. The seal lets go. Each shingle is held down by a strip of sealant. Age, heat and deep cold weaken it, and a strong gust breaks it.
  2. The shingle flaps. An unsealed shingle lifts and drops with every gust, which creases it and loosens the nails holding it.
  3. The shingle tears off. Once a few are gone, the shingles around the gap are exposed and go faster.

Caught at the first or second step, it’s a simple repair: we reseal or replace the lifted shingles and check the nailing around them. Caught at the third step, after rain has soaked the deck, it’s a bigger job. See wind damage repair.

After a windstorm, walk the yard for shingle pieces or ridge caps, and look at each slope from the street for shingles that look lighter, sit higher or flutter. Check the ceilings upstairs after the next rain. Stay off the roof yourself: loose shingles slide underfoot, and walking on them breaks more seals.

Two Kinds of South Beloit Homes

Census estimates show nearly half of South Beloit’s homes, about 48%, were built between 1990 and 2009, many in subdivisions that went up as the city grew. About 13% are older than 1940. The median lands at 1991.

Newer roofs here mostly need wind repairs along the rakes and ridges, plus pipe boot and roof vent fixes. Older houses add chimney flashing, worn valleys and the occasional soft board in plank decking. We price each repair on what we actually find, with photos.

Hail Adds to It

NOAA records hail 1 to 2 inches across in South Beloit on May 12, 2014, including 2-inch hail near Route 2 and Prairie Road. It also lists 1-inch hail on April 4 and August 17, 2023, and 1.5-inch hail on April 17, 2026. Hail loosens granules and cracks shingles, and a hail-weakened shingle is the next one the wind peels back. See hail damage repair. For South Beloit-specific storm help, see hail damage roof repair in South Beloit.

Fix It or Replace It

A repair makes sense when wind or hail damage is limited to a few areas and the rest of the roof still seals down flat. Replacement makes more sense when shingles are lifting all over the roof, it’s been patched in several places already, or the decking under the damaged areas has gone soft. See our page on roof replacement in South Beloit.

We’ll show you photos either way. If a new roof is the answer, see roof replacement. New roofs come with our workmanship warranty plus the GAF warranty you choose, and as a GAF Master Elite contractor, a status GAF gives to fewer than 2% of roofers, we can offer up to a 50-year GAF warranty with up to 30 years on workmanship (GAF eligibility rules apply).

A South Beloit Repair Visit

We start on the slopes that face west and south, where storms usually hit first, and work around the whole roof. Then we check the attic for wet insulation, stained decking or daylight where it shouldn’t be. You get photos and a written price. After the repair, we check the shingles around it, so a loose neighbor doesn’t start the cycle over again. If moisture in the attic is coming from venting rather than the roof, see attic ventilation.

South Beloit Roof Repair FAQ

Can you fix shingles the wind lifted but didn’t tear off?

Usually, yes. If the shingle isn’t creased or torn, we reseal it and check the nails. Creased or torn shingles get replaced.

Why do the same shingles keep blowing off my roof?

Usually because the shingles around them have lost their seal too, or the original nailing was off. We check the whole area around the missing shingles, not just the gap.

Do you repair roofs on both sides of the state line?

Yes. We’re licensed in Illinois (104.017824) and Wisconsin (#1436189), so we can repair roofs in South Beloit and across the line in Beloit.
