South Beloit Homes and Their Roofs
South Beloit has two kinds of housing, and they wear out their roofs differently. Near the Rock River and the older blocks downtown, many houses were built before the city incorporated in 1917. Builders here used the buff limestone that runs along the Rock River and Turtle Creek, and some of those houses still sit on limestone basement walls well over a foot thick. Above those old walls, the roofs have usually been replaced several times. Expect steep pitches, brick chimneys, closed valleys and, now and then, a layer of shingles nailed over an older one.
Then there is the growth era. The Census counted 5,397 people in South Beloit in 2000 and 7,892 in 2010, and Census estimates put nearly half of the city’s homes in the 1990 to 2009 range.
