South Beloit is a few minutes from our Roscoe office, and its houses cover a century of building, from older homes on thick limestone walls to subdivisions from the 2000s. Martin Exteriors Roofing & Siding repairs siding here by replacing the damaged boards or sections, with James Hardie fiber cement first and vinyl as the other main option. We do not patch with sealant or filler. The inspection is free. Call (815) 624-6278, 24/7.
How South Beloit Was Built
South Beloit became a city in 1917, and some houses in the older part of town are older than that. Builders used the buff limestone along the Rock River and Turtle Creek, and some of those homes still sit on limestone basement walls. Then came the growth years. The Census counted 5,397 people in 2000 and 7,892 in 2010, and estimates for 2020 to 2024 put about 48% of homes in the 1990 to 2009 range, with a median of 1991. About 13% of homes predate 1940.
Where Siding Meets Old Stone
On the older houses, trouble usually starts at the bottom of the wall. Siding that runs down close to a stone foundation picks up splash and wicking water, and the wood sill behind it can rot quietly for years. The signs are swollen or soft boards in the first course, paint peeling at the bottom edge, or a wall that feels spongy when pressed.
A proper repair means taking off the lower courses, cutting out soft sheathing and checking the sill, then setting the new bottom course with a clean gap above the stone so water can drain away. James Hardie works well for that course because it does not rot. Filling the joint between siding and stone traps water instead of stopping it, so we do not do it.
Mixed Age Neighborhoods
Neighborhoods like Willowbrook went up over several decades, with homes from the 1960s into the 2000s, so a single street can have ranches with aluminum, 1980s vinyl and 2000s builder vinyl side by side. Each needs a different repair:
- Aluminum. Dents cannot be pushed out, and new panels in old colors are hard to find. We show you how close a match will be before anything is ordered.
- Older vinyl. It turns brittle, so the panels around the damage can crack when unlocked. We tell you up front if a repair may grow.
- Builder vinyl from the growth years. Usually a quick swap if the color is still made, with loose bottoms relocked and renailed.
Near the River and Turtle Creek
Lots close to the Rock River and Turtle Creek stay damp after rain, and the shaded walls grow green film. Film alone is cosmetic, but boards that are soft or swollen on those walls mean water is getting behind them. We check the wrap and sheathing when those boards come off and replace anything that is wet.

South Beloit Siding Repair FAQ
The bottom row of siding on my older house is soft. What causes that?
Usually water splashing or wicking up from the stone foundation into the boards and the sill behind them. We replace the soft boards and sheathing and set the new bottom course with a drainage gap above the stone.
Can you just seal the joint between my siding and the stone foundation?
No. Filling that joint traps water against the wall. We fix it by replacing the damaged boards and leaving a proper gap so water drains away.
My street has houses from several decades. Does that change the repair?
Yes. Aluminum, older vinyl and newer builder vinyl each repair differently. We tell you at the inspection which approach fits your house and how close a match will be.
Do you repair siding in Beloit too?
Yes. We work on both sides of the state line from the same Roscoe office and phone number.
